The people at the bench

The technicians who make your teeth are the ones who fit them

We are a working lab in Poole, not a call centre and not a sales floor. Everything is made here, on our own benches, by our own technicians. When you come in you meet them, and the person who fits your denture is one of the people who made it.

John owns the lab and has been making dentures for the best part of fifty years. He is a Registered Clinical Dental Technician, which is what lets him see you and fit your denture himself, and he works alongside a bench of GDC-registered technicians who between them fabricate a wide range of prosthetics, repair restorations, run our CAD-CAM workflows, make orthodontic and bespoke appliances, and a good deal more besides.

If something is not right, you tell us and we put it right. Whatever happens, we won’t leave you stranded.

  • Led by a Registered Clinical Dental TechnicianJohn is a GDC-registered CDT with close to fifty years at the bench, which is what lets him see you and fit your denture himself.
  • A bench of qualified techniciansBehind John is a team of GDC-registered technicians, including a director who is a chrome specialist and our own prosthetics and appliance bench.
  • Talk to the person who made itIf John is busy, a technician will still come down to see you. You deal with the people at the bench.

How it works, from first call to fitted

The appointments a denture case runs to, at your pace and never rushed. Dentists: send work by post or local courier, with about five working days a stage for acrylic and ten for chrome and crown work.

01

A free consultation

Come in for a calm, no-pressure chat. John looks, listens and explains your options in plain English.

02

First impressions, and your shade

We take the first impressions of your mouth and match the tooth shade in daylight, with you in the chair.

03

Special tray and bite registration

A special tray made to your own mouth gives us a far more accurate second impression, and we register how your jaws meet. Sometimes a wax try-in happens at this visit too.

04

The wax try-in

You see and try your teeth set in wax before anything is finished, so you approve the look and the feel while it can still be changed.

05

A retry, if it is needed

If anything is not quite right at the try-in, we adjust it and you try it again. We would rather do this than finish something you are not happy with.

06

Finish and fit

We finish your denture on our own benches and John fits it, easing it until it is comfortable. Settling-in adjustments afterwards are part of the care.

Today I attended your laboratory with broken dentures. Within two hours you had taken impressions, repaired my denture and even placed a missing tooth. An amazing service, and just in time for my daughter's wedding tomorrow.

After years of problems it is so good to have a denture that fits and to be able to eat all types of food with no problem.

I was dreading dentures. John gave me the option of implants, and my implant bridge looks so natural. I am over the moon.

Questions patients and dentists ask us

No jargon, no pressure. If your question is not here, call the lab and a technician will talk it through.

Inside the Wessex dental laboratory in Poole
Do you see patients directly, or only dentists?
Both. Patients come to us directly for dentures, repairs and advice, and we make lab work for dentists across Dorset. John, our Clinical Dental Technician, sees patients himself, so you are not dealing with a faceless lab.
What does a dental laboratory actually do?
We make the appliances that go in your mouth. For patients that is mostly dentures, whether full, partial, chrome, flexible or implant-retained, plus same-day repairs and mouthguards. For dentists we make crown and bridge work, implant restorations and digital cases. It is all we do, day in and day out.
My denture has just broken. Can you fix it today?
Usually, yes. Bring it straight in to the Poole lab and most repairs are done the same day, often within the hour. Please do not glue it yourself. It is almost impossible to line the pieces up accurately by hand, and once the glue has set out of position we cannot work to that denture, so the repair has to start again from a fresh impression, which costs more.
What is a CDT, and who actually makes my teeth?
A Clinical Dental Technician is a GDC-registered professional who can make and fit dentures directly with patients. John is a Registered CDT with close to fifty years at the bench. Your denture is made here in our own lab, by our own technicians, and John fits it himself. You deal with the bench that made it, not a lab you never see.
What will a new denture cost?
It depends on the type and the materials, so we go through it plainly at your free consultation, with no pressure and no surprises. An acrylic denture costs less than a cobalt-chrome one, and the price includes the try-in stages, not just the finished denture.
I'm a dentist. Can you take my work, and what is the turnaround?
Yes. We cover crown and bridge, prosthetics, implants and full digital work, so one lab covers your whole surgery. Turnaround is about five working days a stage for acrylic and ten for chrome and crown work. We collect by local courier and take cases nationwide by post, and you can talk to the technician who makes your work.
