How do flexible dentures stay in without metal clasps?

A flexible denture is a partial made from a thin, pliable nylon material (the Valplast and Myerson type) rather than rigid acrylic or metal. Instead of metal clasp arms, it has gum-coloured flexible clasps built into the denture itself, which clip gently around your natural teeth to hold it in place.

Because those clasps are the same colour as your gums and there is no metal on show, a flexible denture is one of the most discreet ways to fill a gap. It flexes slightly as you eat and speak, which many people find comfortable.

Flexible is at its best as a partial denture, especially for a small gap such as a lost canine or premolar where a clasp can sit neatly to one side. It is not the right tool for every case, but with our experience we will always steer you towards the right choice for you, even when that is chrome or acrylic rather than flexible.

How it works

From impression to fitted

01

Impressions and shade

We take impressions of your teeth and match the tooth and gum shades, so the denture blends in around your natural teeth.

02

Try-in and refine

You see and try the set-up before it is finished, so you can approve the look and how the clasps sit.

03

Finish and fit

We complete the denture in flexible nylon and fit it, checking that it clips in comfortably and holds without pinching.

Questions about this service

No jargon, no pressure. If your question is not here, call the lab and a technician will talk it through.

How do flexible dentures stay in without metal clasps?
The clasps are built into the denture in the same flexible, gum-coloured material and clip gently around your natural teeth. There is no metal on show, which is what makes them so discreet.
Are flexible dentures right for me, or would chrome or acrylic be better?
Flexible is excellent for a discreet, smaller partial, and it is usually at its best on the smaller, more discreet posterior side plates. For a larger gap, a heavy bite or the strongest long-term partial, chrome is usually better, and for a full set acrylic is the norm. With our experience we will always steer you towards the right choice for you, even when that is not flexible.
How many teeth can a flexible denture replace?
It is designed as a partial denture, so it works best replacing one or a few teeth. For a full arch or a large span, a different design usually gives a more stable result, which we will explain at your consultation.
Can you get flexible dentures on the NHS?
Flexible dentures are generally a private option rather than a routine NHS one. We make them direct to you and confirm the cost upfront so there are no surprises.
What is the process, and how long does it take?
It runs over a few visits, impressions, a try-in and the fit, usually spread across a few weeks so nothing is rushed. Because we make them here, adjustments after fitting are done in the building.
